Wildfire season off to slow start

Cooler, wetter weather slowed the start of wildfire season across much of the West, and especially in Arizona where the number of fires so far this season has been a little more than half the average. California and Washington, however, are expected to have above normal fire potential starting this month because of relatively light spring rains and quick snow melt, Amanda Lee Myers of the Associated Press reports. At the same time, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon and Utah, are likely to see below normal levels of fires for July, according to the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise.
