Utah canal warnings ignored

Logan City officials had been warned for years that an aging, leaky canal could wipe out the homes of residents living below it, yet the city continued to let the privately owned Northern Irrigation Company make safety decisions concerning the structure, Matthew D. LaPlante and Nate Carlisle of the Salt Lake Tribune report in a deeper look at how Saturday’s tragic landslide and flood unfolded. The catastrophe, which killed three people, including two children, has called the canal’s future into question. Farmers downstream of  the canal are now wondering how they will get through this year’s growing season.
